Pop music is weird. I don't understand how some things get popular and why others don't make it. People suck, and everyone's opinion sucks. Now absorb mine, bitch.
HONORABLE MENTION: Same Love - Maclemore X Ryan Lewis ft. Mary Lambert
Why is this an honorable mention? This is a top pop list. This song doesn't quite meld in with the rest. I
can't really shout out the lyrics to this or hop around to it, but there's no way this could be ignored. It's a great song and I'm impressed by its success. I'm glad Macklemore is unforgiving for his beliefs, and if you don't agree with it, not wanting to instigate any angry internet arguments, but come on. It's 2014.
#10. Demons - Imagine Dragons
Now, It's Time was one of my favorite songs from 2012. That song is glorious. Radioactive (spoiler alert) might be in my least favorites of 2013. I was bothered by that. I couldn't get behind it's slow, inconsistant rhythm of verses and such, just didn't settle quite right with me. This song, while noticeably more "pop" is still really fun to listen to, sing along to, get absorbed in by the backing music. I dig it. It sounds great.
#9. Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft. Pharell Williams
I heard this song early on and it clicked with me. This song has a solid groove. It feels great, but I have some issues. Pharell's range is a bit incompatible with mine and it's hard to shout out the words to this, which is a shame. Shouting along to songs is fun (see Rock Band) and having to try to sing to fit in with the song is a bit less for me when it comes to pop. But I do love that Daft Punk-ian bridge.
#8. Royals - Lorde
While inconsistent with other things I may say, I really do enjoy this song. Can't quite put my finger on it, possibly the subject matter, partially just getting into the groove of the song. It's easy to do. And it's wonderful.
#7. Mirrors - Justin Timberlake
Justin didn't really have a good year. Mirrors was his only song I care about, and for good reason. The backbeat, melody is solid. And yeah, again, the chorus is kinda hard to sing along to through shouting, but I love the music outside of the vocals so much in addition to the vocals. I even enjoy the extended version.
#6. Treasure - Bruno Mars
Love the disco beat, love singing along to Bruno Mars for the most part. This is that quite solidly, and I love hearin this song. This is a solid pop song and I'll always sing along.
#5. Wake Me Up - Avicii
It's not often, I feel, for a pop song to have a deep-voiced male. Still fun to sing along to, and this guy,
whatever his name is, sings all over the place. And it's fun. He's got a great voice. And Avicii has some really catchy edm.
#4. Still Into You - Paramore
"Rock" music in the pop charts have the potential to be really awesome. I put rock in quotes as this is a song that noticeably has drums, bass, and guitar, instead of a vocalist with a backbeat. And the drums don't sound like a drumtrack. But the main reason I like this is just the feel of the song. I like happy, poppy songs, especially those that are fun to sing along to. This one hits that perfectly.
#3. Can't Hold Us - Macklemore X Ryan Lewis ft. Ray Dalton
I heard this song at least a hundred times on the radio alone. 10/10 would listen to again. But I will say, hearing it uncut is so much more rewarding, as infrequent as it is.
#2. Swimming Pools - Kendrick Lamar
Generally, I don't like rap. A rap song I like has to have some sort of music to it as well as be fun to follow along, whether it be rapping along, or just being lyrically stimulating. It's fun to spit out lyrics in rapid succession, and this song just feels great.
#1. Thrift Shop - Macklemore X Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz
I shouldn't need to explain this, so I won't.
